It is so easy to begin a new conversation with someone using chat in Teams. You can simply click the little square with a pencil or you can begin typing at the bottom of the screen in the conversation pane if you already have a conversation started with someone.
When you are having a conversation with chat you have so many options, not just text or calling. From the messaging window pane you can click the A and begin composing your message with many editing options.
You can also attach files, send emoji, GIF’s, stickers and even schedule a meeting. You also have the ability to access Stream and even send praise.
One of our favorite features of the conversation chat window is the availability to add messaging extensions. When you click the ellipses in the chat bar, you will be taken to an additional apps screen where you will be able to add additional apps to your messaging options.
Jenallee is a HUGE fan of the Wakelet app integration! We will go into more rules for integrating Wakelet in the next section. Stay tuned…
Another nice feature in chat is that you have the ability to send your message with importance or mark as urgent. This is extremely helpful when you need to draw attention to your message.
Within each chat you also have the ability to share files, add additional apps to the plus tab and you can even turn your chat into a video call, an audio call or even share your screen.
Adding Others to a Chat
At any point in the chat or call you can also add additional people to the conversation or even leave the conversation.
When adding someone to a chat, you have the option to include past chat history. Teams will save the whole chat history, all the way back to the first message. And if someone leaves the group, their chat responses are still there in your chat history.
Hide/Unhide, Mute or Pin a Chat
While you can’t delete a chat in Teams, you can hide it from your chat list or mute it so you will stop getting notifications. Here are more details.
Hide a chat
While you can’t delete an entire chat, you can hide a chat from your chat list if it’s not relevant to you anymore. To hide a chat, select Chat to open the chat list. Next to the chat you want to hide, select More options > Hide.
The chat will be hidden until someone posts a new message to it. (And you can always resume an old conversation that you’ve hidden as well.) You can also delete individual messages that you’ve sent.
Unhide a chat
Need to see a hidden chat again? Unhide a chat that you’ve hidden before by using search.
- In the Search box at the top, type a word or phrase that’s included in the chat that you want to unhide (such as the sender or a participant’s name).
- Choose the hidden chat that you want to unhide, and then select Chat in the left toolbar. The chat will appear in the Chat feed again.
- In the chat, select More options > Unhide.
Mute a chat
When you mute a chat, you’ll still be included in the conversation, but won’t get notifications from it.
Select Chat to open the chat list. Find the name of the chat you want to mute. Then, select More options > Mute. If you change your mind, just select it again and unmute it. An icon appears next to the names of the participants to remind you that the chat has been muted.
Pin a chat
You can pin frequent conversations to the top of your chat list.
We think pinning chats is a great feature because when you pin a specific chat , the chat will stay at the top of the list and then it is easily accessible. You also have the ability to leave or mute a chat if it is no longer relevant to you.
Select Chat to open the chat list. Find the name of the conversation you want to pin. Then, select More options > Pin. This ensures that the chat stays at the top of your list. If you change your mind, just select it again and unpin it.
One of our favorite features of chat is that you can name the conversation. This makes it so easy to go back and find that conversation at a later time.
